The Subase Reunion Picnic was a huge success thanks to all that showed up and those that helped.

I will be contacting those who showed interest in chairing and serving on a committee in the next few day's and selecting a few people to serve on a committee to start planning the next event.

We had approximately $500.00 left over thanks to the purchases of the patches, shirts and generous donations which I will turn over to whoever is in charge of the next Get-together.  This gives us a head start on the next function.

A lot was learned from the first Reunion.  There are a lot of things we will repeat and a lot more we won't.  There was a lot of food and drink left over this time.  Apparently us old people don't eat and drink like we did a few years ago in Hawaii.

It was suggested by several that the next event have a Hawaii theme.  I will pass this on to the committee for consideration.

Several people said they would like to do this next time in Hawaii.  I think this would be great!   But I realistically don't see this happening simple because we don't have a large enough membership to draw from.  But the idea is not dead.  I will also pass this information on.

At this time I would like to thank everyone for coming and helping and for all the kind words from you showing your appreciation for putting this together.  It meant a lot to me to know that my efforts were truly appreciated.

Detachment 716 History

Subase Pearl Det 716 Was formed in May of 1977 at the Naval Reserve Center located at Ft. Snelling in the Twin Cities of Minnesota and comanded by Comander Alan A. Anderson.  The mission was to support the regular Navy at the Submarine Base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Subase was combined with the surface fleet in 1993 and became NAVIMFAC (Naval Intermediate Repair Facility) Pearl Harbor.  Part of Det 716 went to the Subase in March of each year for two weeks of Acdutra (active duty for training), and the remainder in August.  This two week period was fondly known as "fun in the sun".  We took with us a considerable amount of talent and was able to accompolish many repairs the active duty personnel simply didn't have the time to do or manpower to spare.  While there, we worked hard and we played hard.

 Website Dedication

When I first started this website it was intended to be simply a place where memories could be posted, a place where former Subase Pearl Detachment 716 shipmates could go to look at photos of people they shared a good portion of their lives with and read stories of events long past.  It has become that and more.  After several months of building and editing this website and reading stories from shipmates about our men and women in uniform still  serving their country and stories of men and women in uniform who have given their lives in the name of freedom, I have come to realize the website should have a greater purpose.  Therefore I have decided to dedicate this site to our men and women in uniform still serving and to those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.  To our shipmates still serving, we the former members of Subase Pearl Detachment 716 solute you.  We thank you for your sacrifice.  God Bless America.

 Retired Reserve Computation

The retired pay for a member who elects transfer to the Retired Reserve is computed using the average monthly basic pay rate to which the member would have been entitled at the highest grade satisfactorily held, had the member been on active duty during the entire period of the member's high 36 months. In most cases, this would be the average basic pay rate in effect for the member at ages 57, 58, and 59. The formula to compute the retired pay is as follows:
1. Divide all points credited in all years by 360 to convert the points into years of service, including fractions;
2. take the average of the last 36 months of monthly basic pay for the member's grade and length of service at the time the member becomes entitled to receive retired pay - age 60 (remember to include longevity increases while a member of the Retired Reserve);
3. multiply that rate by 2.5 percent of the years of service (up to a maximum of 30 years of service) computed in (1) above.

Sounds simple enough <grin>.  Hey, I didn't write it, I copied it from an official site.

The Submarine Store

Below is the link to The Submarine Store.  The site has a lot of good Submarine related information on it and has an event calendar where I have posted the upcoming Subase Reunion information.  They have Submarine related items for sale on this site as well.  Please take the time to visit their site.

Travel at the Government's Expense

You might not realize, but you may be eligible for travel at the governments expense.  The travel program is called Space-A, and you may qualify to utilize this benefit.  The criteria for eligibility of this benefit is spelled out on several websites.  I have added a link to the best site I've found. To check the information out on other websites simply type "Space A" into your search engine of your browser.  Charles Fitzsimmons and Don Ulbright have both used this method of travel several times.  The only cost to you, $7.85 for a box meal.  Not a bad deal!  There are some obvious drawbacks such as: 1) Few if any flights leave the Twin Cities area, 2) You might not get on the flight, or may be bumped and 3) Your family most likely will not be eligible to use this avenue of transportation.  Charley flies in and out of Grand Forks, N. D.  Check out the site and see if you are eligible.  The site that I have the link for also has a listing of all the facilities in the world that you can fly in and out of.

Another website that Charles Fitzsimmons uses for his Space-A travel is:
